Meeting 306 -A Tasting of Spanish Wines

Held at Waltham St Lawrence         Friday 21st September 2007

Speaker:   Mike Ritchie MW (Moreno Wines Ltd.)

     Mike presented us with a wide range of   wines from a variety of districts around Spain. The evening started with a refreshing glass of Cava made from mainly Parellada and Xarel.lo. There followed a couple of whites, with the Con Class, containing 60% Verdejo with the remainder Viura and a small amount of SB, getting approval from everyone. The Reds proved to be consistently good to excellent. All had good fruit with the Guelbenzu Evo and the Pagos de Carraovejas Crianza getting high marks for fruit, rich nose and above all long finishes. But of the reds the Najavas was a clear winner in the 'value for money' stakes.
     The tasting was rounded off with a PX Gran Reserva from Toro Albala. (22years in barrel) A glorious nose was the introduction to a mouthful of nectar that lingered in the mouth for ages. While luscious and almost toffee-like, the wine was not at all cloying.  After the tasting we were provided with a feast of Spanish food produced by Charlotte. The full details are given below.
A final note: At the meeting, presentations of diplomas for long service as officers of the Branch were given to Pat and Tony Curtis and medals to several members who had been with Branch for 10 years or more, More details and some photos of the presentation will be provided later.
